Where to Read Kodansha Manga: What's Free on K MANGA and What You Have to Buy

Kodansha licenses some of the biggest manga in the business — Attack on Titan, Parasyte, Akira — but it doesn't run one single reader app the way WEBTOON or Tapas do. It runs two different official doors instead: K MANGA, a free-to-start app that hands out chapters on a ticket system, and kodansha.us, the publisher's own store where you buy the print or digital volume outright. Which one gets you reading depends on whether you're willing to wait for tickets to recharge or would rather just pay and finish it tonight.

What you can read, and where

K MANGA: free, if you're willing to wait

K MANGA is Kodansha's own reader app, and it doesn't work like a subscription. Every series on it hands out title tickets — free tickets that recharge on a timer specific to that series and stack up to a cap while you're not reading. Log in daily and you also collect premium tickets, which work on any title instead of just one. Either kind of ticket only unlocks the oldest chapter you haven't read yet — you can't use a ticket to skip ahead to the ending, only Points do that.

Once you run out of tickets, or want to jump past where they'd get you, you buy Points and spend them on the specific chapter or volume. Points bought in the app and Points bought on the K Manga website are separate balances that don't carry over, so pick one and stick with it.

K MANGA launched in the US and Canada in 2023 and has been adding countries steadily since — the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, several more in 2025 including India and Brazil. It still isn't available everywhere, which is why every row below is flagged 'region availability varies' — check the app in your own country before assuming a series is reachable.

kodansha.us and the print imprints: no waiting, and often no free tier

kodansha.us is the publisher's own storefront, and for its highest-profile titles — Attack on Titan, Akira, Vinland Saga — there's no free option at all: you're buying the print volume, the digital volume through a retailer like Kindle or Kobo, or both. A good number of other series do post a free preview chapter or two right on the kodansha.us page before the paywall starts, which is enough to tell if the art and pacing are for you before you spend anything.

Vertical and Kodansha Comics are imprints Kodansha owns outright, not separate companies, so their releases run under the same buy-the-volume model. A handful of titles — Tokyo Revengers is the clearest example — get a K MANGA digital release for the free-ticket read and a Seven Seas print omnibus for the finished physical volumes, so the two doors aren't always exclusive of each other.

Is it worth the wait, or should you just buy it?

If you're fine getting one free chapter every day or two, K MANGA's ticket system genuinely costs nothing — it's slow by design, built to nudge you toward Points rather than lock you out completely. If you want to read a whole series in a weekend, tickets won't get you there, and buying enough Points to skip the wait ends up close to what you'd have paid for the print anyway.
